Born in Dallas, Texas, Clayton Davis went to Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana on a tennis scholarship. He attended Southern Methodist University school of Law where his father was a law professor for over thirty years, and a professor emeritus. Clayton graduated from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1981 and was admitted to the Louisiana Bar in 1981 and the Texas Bar in 1982.

Clayton started his law career in Lake Charles in 1981. He has always been involved in litigation, focusing primarily on insurance defense and maritime matters. Because of his Texas background, his practice has expanded to southeast Texas and has given him extensive experience in state and federal courts in Texas.

Clayton has been a member of the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, the Louisiana Trial Lawyer's Association, and the Maritime Law Association, having served on several of its committees.

Representative cases in which Clayton has been lead counsel include Dahlen v. Gulf Crews, Inc., 281 F.3d 487 (5th Cir. 2002); Guillory v. Union Pacific Corp., 01-960 (La.App. 3 Cir. 5/15/02), 817 So.2d 1234, writ denied, 02-2094 (La.11/1/02); Edwards v. Daugherty, 97-1542 (La.App. 3 Cir. 3/10/99), 729 So.2d 1112, writs denied, 99-1393, 99-1434 (La.9/17/99), 747 So.2d 1105; Ard v. Gemini Exploration Co., 894 SW.2d 11 (Tex. App - Houston 14th Dist.1994); Trahan v. Thenamaris Ship Mgmt., Inc., 614 So.2d 362 (La.App. 3rd Cir. 1993); Washington v. City of Lake Charles, 582 So.2d 997 (3rd Cir. 1991), writ denied, 586 So.2d 562 (La. 1991); Smith v. Tenneco Oil Co., Inc., 803 F.2d 1386 (5th Cir. 1986); Bourque v. Gulf Marine Transportation, Inc., 480 So.2d 337 (La.App. 3rd Cir. 1985);

Clayton is involved in church and civic activities and is recognized for his political involvement. He is a former member of the Republican State Central Committee and served as the treasurer of the Louisiana Republican Party. Governor Roemer appointed him to the prestigious Louisiana State Mineral Board where he served from 1988 to 1990.

Clayton is married to the former Geralyn Peace and they have one daughter, Amanda.
